With the future looking brighter due to COVID rates falling, you may be looking at communicating when furloughed employees will be returning to work. You may qualify for a downloadable ‘return from furlough’ template letter, depending on your membership level, which can help you communicate employees return to work effectively. We also have a webinar this month regarding furloughed employees that are returning to work so don’t forget to register!
There is an exhaustive list of monthly awareness days in our calendar for this month but as it is Zero Discrimination Day and No Smoking Day, you may wish to review your policies to understand if you have guidance around smoking in the workplace and if you have a comprehensive diversity and inclusion policy. Don’t forget that your membership may include these in downloadable form so check there first for updated policies.
In light of Zero Discrimination Day you may also wish to familiarise yourself with the difference in positive discrimination and positive action.
Positive discrimination is when you give preferential treatment to people with a protected characteristic rather than due to their suitability.
Positive action in work would describe an employer taking action to make sure the workforce is equal and diverse. This is to encourage those under-represented but makes sure not to discriminate against another whilst doing so.
The difference between the two is that positive discrimination adversely effects those that are not treated fairly whereas positive action helps those under-represented whilst not discriminating against anyone else in the process.
"It is the ultimate luxury to combine passion and contribution. It’s also a very clear path to happiness."
